520 km. 10–14 hours. Three ways to get here. The road from Delhi to Auli follows the Alaknanda river through the Himalayan foothills. It's one of the most beautiful drives in India.
Here's every route, with real costs and times.
Route 1: Drive from Delhi
Best for: Couples, families, anyone who wants freedom to stop.
Delhi → Meerut → Haridwar → Rishikesh → Devprayag → Rudraprayag → Chamoli → Joshimath → Vaadi
The first 4 hours are boring highway. After Rishikesh, everything changes.
The valley narrows. The river gets louder. The mountains rise on both sides. This is where the drive becomes the trip.
The stops that matter
Devprayag (5 hrs from Delhi) — Two rivers become the Ganga here. You can see the exact line where blue meets green from the bridge. Stop for 10 minutes and chai.
Rudraprayag (6.5 hrs) — Lunch. The dhabas here are decent. Dal, rice, sabzi — nothing fancy, exactly right.
Chamoli (8 hrs) — Fill your tank here. No fuel for the next 45 km to Joshimath.
Road reality
- NH-7 is paved the whole way
- Single-lane between Rudraprayag and Chamoli — expect oncoming trucks
- Monsoon (Jul–Sep): landslides happen. Check BRO road status
- Last 16 km from Joshimath is steep switchbacks through oak forest

What to carry
Non-negotiable:
- Cash: ₹5,000–10,000 (no reliable ATMs after Rudraprayag)
- Valid ID (Aadhaar or passport) — checkpoints near Joshimath
- Warm layers — it's 35°C in Delhi and 10°C at Vaadi
Smart to have:
- Motion sickness pills (last 3 hours are winding)
- Downloaded music (signal dies after Karnaprayag)
- Power bank
- Snacks and water
The last 20 minutes
From Joshimath, the road climbs through dense oak forest. The air gets thinner and cooler. Pine gives way to rhododendron.
After 16 km of switchbacks, you reach Vaadi at 7,500 feet.
We'll have chai ready.
FAQ
Is the road safe?
Yes, in fair weather. It's a national highway. Don't drive at night — no streetlights in the mountains.
Can I take my own car?
Any car works. SUV is more comfortable but not required. The road is paved throughout.
Should I break the journey overnight?
If leaving Delhi after noon, stop in Rudraprayag or Srinagar. If leaving before 5 AM, you can do it in one go.
Is there a helicopter or cable car?
The Auli ropeway runs Joshimath → Auli ski resort. Vaadi is accessed by road from Joshimath, not via the ropeway.
