There is no alarm clock at Vaadi. You wake up because the light changes, or because a Himalayan bulbul has decided that the pine tree outside your window is the right place to sing at 6 AM.

Vaadi sits at 8,000 feet in a pine forest near Auli, Uttarakhand. It is two cabins, a kitchen, and a view that changes every hour. This is what a day here actually looks like.

Morning: 6 AM to 9 AM

The sun hits the Nanda Devi range before it reaches the property. From the Sky View balcony on the first floor, you can watch the peaks turn from grey to pink to gold. From Forest View on the ground floor, the light filters through pine branches.

Chai appears first. Masala chai made with fresh milk from the village dairy. It arrives with no ceremony, just a knock and a tray.

Breakfast is served between 8 and 9 AM. It rotates daily: mandua ki roti with pahadi dal one day, aloo paratha with fresh curd the next, poha with chai on the third. Seasonal fruit with local honey is always available. Everything is cooked in the Vaadi kitchen, from scratch, that morning.

Late Morning: 9 AM to 12 PM

This is the golden window. The air is sharp and clean, the forest is quiet, and you have roughly three hours before the afternoon clouds roll in.

Most guests walk. The pine forest starts at the property edge, and within ten minutes you are on trails that wind through oak and rhododendron. No guide needed for the short loops. For longer treks, we can arrange local guides who know every ridge and stream.

Some guests read. The balcony at Sky View is built for it: a wide wooden ledge, a clear view of the valley, and the kind of silence that makes pages turn slowly.

Some guests do nothing. This is also fine. There is no itinerary at Vaadi.

Afternoon: 12 PM to 4 PM

Lunch is served between 12:30 and 1:30 PM. Kafuli with steamed rice. Rajma chawal. Pahadi dal with local greens. Chapati with seasonal sabzi. The dishes rotate, but the principle does not change: Garhwali recipes, local ingredients, cooked that day.

After lunch, the clouds often come in. The valley fills with white, the peaks disappear, and the forest goes quiet in a different way. This is the nap window. Or the journaling window. Or the stare-out-the-window-and-think-about-nothing window.

Rhododendron juice (buransh) and masala chai are available anytime. Just ask.

Evening: 4 PM to 7 PM

The clouds clear, usually around 4 PM. The light turns amber and the mountains reappear. This is sunset hour at Vaadi, and it is worth being on the balcony for.

If you want a walk, the village heritage walk is a good afternoon option: centuries-old temples, terraced farms, and families who have lived in these valleys for generations. Half a day, easy pace.

Night: 7 PM onwards

Dinner is served between 7:30 and 8:30 PM. Aloo ke gutke with jhangora kheer. Kumaoni raita with dal bhaat. Pahadi chicken curry with rice. The kitchen closes after dinner, but warm water and honey are always available.

After dinner, the stars come out. At 8,000 feet, with no city light for 100 km in any direction, the Milky Way is not a concept. It is a bright band across the sky that you can see with your naked eyes.

There is no TV at Vaadi. There is WiFi, but it is slow enough that you stop trying after a day. Most guests are asleep by 10 PM. The pine trees settle. The silence is total.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there WiFi at Vaadi?

Yes, but it is basic mountain WiFi. Good enough for messaging, not reliable for video calls or remote work. Most guests find this is a feature, not a bug.

Can I get vegetarian food?

Yes. All meals can be fully vegetarian. The default menu is largely vegetarian with one non-veg option at dinner. Let us know your dietary preferences when you book.

How far is Auli from Vaadi?

Auli ski resort is approximately 12 km from Vaadi, about 30 minutes by car. In winter, the cable car from Joshimath to Auli is the most scenic way to get there.

Is Vaadi suitable for families with children?

Yes. The property is safe, the forest is gentle, and children love the open space. We do not have a pool or playground, but we have something better: a mountain.
